报告人简介
Professor Nicolaou was born in Cyprus and educated at the University of London. He obtained his PhD degree in 1972. Then, he did his postdoctoral work at Columbia University with Professor T. J. Katz and at Harvard University with E. J. Corey. In 1989, he accepted joint appointments at the University of California, San Diego, where he was Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, and The Scripps Research Institute, where he served as the Chairman of the Department of Chemistry and held the Darlene Shiley Chair in Chemistry and the Aline W. and L. S. Skaggs Professor of Chemical Biology (1996–2013) in the Department of Chemistry. From 2003 to 2009, he concurrently served as the Founder and Director of the Chemical Synthesis Laboratory at A*STAR, Biopolis in Singapore and in 2012, he was appointed Visiting Professor at Chongqing University, China. In 2013, Professor Nicolaou joined Rice University as the Harry C. and Olga K. Wiess Professor of Chemistry in the BioScience Research Collaborative. He is a Member of National Academy of Sciences of USA, German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and American Philosophical Society. He is also Corresponding Member of the Academy of Athens, and Foreign Member of the Royal Society of London. He has made outstanding contributions not only in Chemistry, but also in biology and pharmaceutical. He has been focusing on the total synthesis of architecturally novel and biologically important natural products, such as Taxol and vancomycin. His work is described in his 750 publications and book series of Classics in Total Synthesis and book of Molecules That Changed the World. Due to his outstanding contributions in research, he has been nominated for the Nobel Prize many times and received numerous prizes and honors from all over the world. Last but not the least, he has supervised more than 60 Chinese students. Some of them are well-known Professors in China, such as Professor Yang Zhen in Peking University, Professor Dai Wei-Min in the Hong Kong University, Professor Li Ang and Professor Tang Wenjun in Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry. In 2012, he joined the Innovative Drug Research Center at Chongqing University, as an adjunct professor. He is setting up a world-class research lab at this center on the total synthesis of natural products, chemical biology, drug discovery and drug process development.
